What is Football Canterbury’s Bill Brackenbury Cup?
The Bill Brackenbury Cup (BBC) is Football Canterbury’s prestigious Premier League competition. Established in 2014, the BBC is the highest level of amateur men’s football which pays homage to Mr William (Bill) Brackenbury. The competition is highly regarded and attracts players from all over Sydney who wish to play in a strong competition without the diligence of playing at the NPL level.
Enfield Rovers FC has a strong squad who have won the competition in 2021 and 2023.
Who is Bill Brackenbury?
Born 1907 in Sydney, Bill served as the CDSFA’s Secretary/Treasurer continuously for a quarter of a century, and was also secretary of the former NSW Amateur Soccer Football Association from 1957 to 1965. He also was a founding member of Hurlstone Park Wanderers Soccer Football Club at the age of 16. He is a Football Canterbury Life Member and inductee of the Hall of Fame and it is with distinction that our association’s highest level of open men’s football is named after a gentleman that gave so much to the sport he loved.
When is the competition played?
The BBC starts in the first week of April and runs through to the Grand Final which is usually played in the last week of August. Games are held either on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon, with some mid-week night matches applicable if there are any catch up rounds required due to wet weather ground closures.
Do I need to attend trials to make the team?
Absolutely. Our BBC squad is upon selection every year. Trials start in December and the last available spots are filled by February. Spots are not guaranteed due to the competitive nature of the competition.
How many squad members does the BBC team usually have?
BBC squads can use up to 25 players in a season, however our club likes to keep that number to 20-22 players.
Is there prize money for winning?
Yes. The season Premiers and Champions will be eligible to receive prize money, with the amount of which determined annually prior to the commencement of each playing season by the Board of the Association.
