Junior Rovers U8-U12

Our Junior Rovers teams start from Under 8’s and goes right through to Under 12’s. Some children start their football journeys in this age bracket, however most graduate from under 7’s. At this age we continue to develop the players in a fun environment, graduating them through different size fields as they get older.

The players learn new rules and strategies which helps prepare them for competitive full-size field games once they turn 13. During this age bracket, teams are formed into divisions based on ability and play a home and away round robin against other teams from within our association (Football Canterbury)

When are games played?

Under 8 to Under 11 Mixed: Games are always played on Saturday mornings from the first week of April until the final week of August. Kick off times vary between 8am to midday depending on the schedule set by the association

Where are games played?

Games are played within the Football Canterbury Association and can be anywhere from Balmain in the east, Earlwood in the south, Concord in the north and Roselands in the west. Half of the games are played at our home ground Henley Park with the other half away from home.

Can my child play with their friends?

Yes they can HOWEVER at this age, teams are split into divisions. So please be wary that if your child isn’t at the same level as their friends, then we encourage your child to compete with equal-skilled players as it’s better for their development. However we leave this decision to the coach of the team. If you want your child to play with their friends, you can request this during the registration process where there is a section stating “Do you have any preferred team or teammates?” Please write down your child’s friends name and we will consult with the coach of the team.

Role of the coach

The role of our coaches in this age group is to offer children appropriate development opportunities in a fun and enjoyable environment. By encouraging participation to a greater extent than winning games, the chances of keeping children playing football greatly increases, as this age bracket play in a non-competitive format (no points table or finals series)

Children are encouraged to work things out for themselves as they are more likely to remember the skills they have learned, which is what makes training vital at this age. Coaches are sent specific videos to aid their coaching during the season and are involved in free courses run by our association and our club to enhance their coaching skills.

When is training?

Training is conducted one night per week on a repetitive day which is convenient for the coach. Many teams in this age group utilise the skill based Rovers Academy training. This is held on Thursday nights from 6pm-7pm and is an additional cost. For more information please click here

What are the rules?

Our club follows the Miniroos National Playing Format which are the official guidelines set by Football Australia and Football NSW. Additional to the rules found at the top of the page, the full rules can be found by clicking here

Are there referees at this age?

We call them game leaders. Our club follows the guidelines set by Football Canterbury and appoint our own game leaders who are usually players and parents from our club. The game leaders are 12 years old and above and go through training and certification by our association so they can competently officiate games using their knowledge of the set rules.
